There are components of the MLA standard that are made for that point. Line spacing, font type, font size and format of the paper are set so that it can be roughly estimated how many words should be on that page....with everyone starting in approximately the same place it is easier to tell how many people met the word count, exceeded it or fell short and they can usually guess how much you fell short....with that said, if you are short I would keep writing and try to get as close as possible to the word count and do not include heading, title, and works cited because they don’t...

I think they see so many they get a rough idea on nos within the region of 300 - 500 words without counting. What you've got to remember the word count is there for a reason. That being a good essay will be around the word count. Do aim for the limit & your be sure to write a good essay. Gd luck editing & enjoy living the Uni life!!

Yes. You can also do a word county within a Word Document. The document can be scanned into a database and the document upload into word or some Word Processing program. They can check the clarity of APA / plagiarism there as well.

The university I went to used to scan it into a computer which had software that could count the words, and they did penalise if you went over it. I don't know if your college/uni does this, but there is a strong chance.

Yeah they see so many. They can count the lines and get a pretty good idea as to how many words there are.

It's generally obvious if you are close to the appropriate number of words. I've never gotten nit picky about 1499 or something of that nature. If I think it's off, I've counted before. I'd rather know for sure than penalize a student who is not off just because it looks off.

most teachers will count the words in a line that is about the average length of most of the lines in you paper then multiply it by the number of lines in your paper. so they will know if it is way over or way under.

Your teachers have years of experience to know what 1,500-1,650 word essays look like, and some teachers do count!

They look at so many that they get a rough idea of how it should look. If it looks rather long they'll count them to check.

You'd be surprised. They MAY ask YOU to include a word-count, which I'd not try to pad.

That is why they have graduate/PhD students. I would try and stick close to the word count because you never really know how picky they will be.

I think they do count! Mine went over by 21 words once, and I got marked down! Bit of a jobsworth, eh?

Do you really think anyone on here can possibly answer what your professor is going to do? I think it would be in your best interest to go over just a little bit.
