Let me break it down to you.
First of you need to get accepted into a good college with a great pre-medical school program.
How to get into a good College?
You need to show proof that you are truly interested in your future career by doing volunteer work and extracurricular activities related to that major. For example, since your are interested in medicine, volunteer at a hospital, Red Cross, clinic or other health related places during the summer. Established a rapport with the people there. Use that experience and what you have learned to write an excellent personal statement. You need to have a clear sense of what your career goals are in life. State that in your personal statement. Now, you will need to have four strong letters of recommendation(to prove that you did volunteer and that you are an excellent candidate for their schools). Try to get them from your supervisor from that internships as well as from teachers within the field that interest you. You need to have great GPA (4.0) and Test score. It is to your best interest to do well in all subject matter at school to show that you are a well rounded individual. Pick one exam to study for like the SAT or ACT. You will also need to take AP and honor classes in the field that you are planning to go to. You also need to take two or more subject test given by the SAT II test makers.
All it takes is just one great extra curricular activity that speak to your dedication and passion for your future career objective. Three would be great.
In college, complete the requirements to get into medical school. As an undergrad, you can major in anything. I was a biology major. College will take about 3-4 years. 3 years if you go to summer school.
The pre-med requirements that you need to complete while in college are:
Biology (I &II), Chemistry (I &II), organic chemistry (I &II), physics (I &II), Calculus (I &II), English composition (I&II). Extra classes to make your self competitive are : anatomy & physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Statistic.
You need a cumulative college GPA of 3.5+
You also need to have research experience and clinical experience. Shadow a doctor or something. My advice to you is become an EMT while you complete your pre-med requirements, this will give you plenty of clinical experience.
MCAT: you need to ACE the medical entrance exam known as the MCAT 35+ should be your goal. You take this test in you Junior Year in college. Use Kaplan or another test preparation center. Get the examkracker book it is very helpful.
Familiarize yourself with this website. They are the one who give the MCAT exam and you will need to apply for medical school through them. http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/
You will need 4 STRONG letters of recommendation.
Getting accepted into medical school is not easy. People with 4.0 GPA, 40+ on the MCAT, + great letter of recommendation + great clinical experience have a hard time getting accepted. Stay competitive at every step of the process.
After you get accepted into medical school. Medical school will provide you with the opportunity to explore what type of doctor you want to become. Do well in medical school. Pass your two licensing exams so you can get accepted into a residency program which is extremely competitive. NOT EASY AT ALL. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are looking at least 12 years of school after you get out of High school. Dont let that deter you from achieving your goal.
You need to complete your residency, it is part of the training.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!
