hey,
i am going to college now after just finishing secondary school. My career plans are to become a commercial pilot. As i am going to college i wish to choose subjects that will hopefully benefit my chosen career. I do know that "Physics" is needed, so i have chosen that as one of my A-level subjects. Isit also vital to have Mathematics? As i do want to take it, so if something does happen at least i have Maths to back-me-up and it is used in nearly every job. But is having a AS-level in Maths a waste of time? Due too i only got a C in my GCSE Maths, and i can do a 2-year AS-level course. And what else shall i take? Help please!!!

Physics, Maths, English (Language or Literature), Geography, Technology (like DT at school), ICT, Business studies.

You will find Maths AS extremely hard with only a C at Gcse. I would go for Physics, English and Geography. The Physics will give you the neccessary maths while the others will give you some of the other qualities you will need to fly.

Physics, Geography and English as your A2's and Maths as your AS (You usually drop one of the 4 original subjects you take after AS) will do you well.

While it is a good idea to complete you A- Levels, you don't actually need them to gain a Commercial Pilots' Licence.

You will need to do a different set of exams altogether once you start your flying training. They are called ATPLs. (Airline Transport Pilot's Licence). Having done them myself I can say they are pretty tough, and can be compared to doing a degree.

I would advise you to 'google' Cabair or Oxford Air Training School (considered the best in Europe, British Airways train their cadets there). These websites will tell you more about education 'guidelines' Best of luck.

Email me anytime, I am a pilot for Ryanair.

Maths and physics are essential. Geography might help in locating the countries of the world.
