If you are comfortable with your chair, your table, your keyboard, u'll feel at ease. U'll get no muscular pain or whatsoever... so u'll be in better health, good mood, not frustrated with the infrastructure, so u'll be able to deliver the goods better with better efficienct, and thus enhance your personal performance and hence the performance of the company.

Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance (definition adopted by the International Ergonomics Association in 2000).

The science that studies how humans interact with machines, with emphasis on comfort and in lowering the possibility for injuries.

For example, when you hear of ergonomic chairs they are designed for proper back posture and to minimize lower back and shoulder pain, and for optimal arm placement for people that need to type, etc.

Another example is the instrument panel pod in your car. All the instruments are laid out so you can quickly check them without keeping your eyes out of the road for too long. As many controls as possible are placed within reach of the steering wheel, so you spend as much time as possible holding the steering wheel with both hands. The shifter will usually be positioned so you don't have to lean forward to reach it.

I believe it refers to the economy of motion. In the human body context it refers to the comfort and efficiency with which you move around to accomplish tasks.
