When studying for a PhD in Theoretical Physics, what do you have to do to get awarded with the PhD? e.g. writing a book or something...
Also what are some examples of past thesis questions?

You'll need a bachelors in physics, a masters in physics, and a PhD in physics. Theoretical physics isn't a field of physics, it's a way of approaching physics. You still need to eventually pick a field (like optics, nuclear, particle, or astrophysics). The bachelors and masters about about taking courses and learning how to do research (summer internships, honors thesis, masters thesis). The PhD is about picking an original topic to investigate. You will not be writing a book. You'll be writing a dissertation, which is usually published in the form of several papers in academic journals.

Here's a list of recent PhD topics in astronomy and physics.

usually to get a graduate degree in physics you'll want an undergraduate degree in the two physics or something comparable, like math or electric powered engineering. i do no longer understand something approximately your undergrad degree, what sort of math you have studied, and that kind of project. that's superb to ask the educational counselors at universities.

You do research with help from a research advisor. Sciences are all about getting publications in scientific journals.
