I think a lot of people support piracy because they are mad at big companies. How many people do you know who haven't had a problem with Windows or one of it's applications? I think people feel the products are flawed, and since they had to suffer the consequences, then making a copy of a program and giving it to a friend is revenge. Some may think a program costs too much. A program like Microsoft Office is very expensive, and one may only use Outlook, Word and Excel, why pay for Power Point, MS Access and Visio? Many of these programs are very expensive but we get used to using them at work, where our employer paid. Then we get home and think, I need to write a quick letter and I am very familiar with Word or it has that neat font or I need to balance my checkbook and Excel will keep everything straight. We only want to use a limited amount of the many capabilities these programs contain, and it is not worth many hundreds of dollars just to be able to balance a check book. Maybe there could be a smaller version of many of these programs for a smaller cost. As for music, it started a long time ago when people would record their albums on cassette for the car. If your friend liked the album, you lent it to him and he made a copy. When VCRs became popular, the trend carried over. Then they put in Macrovision copy protection and everyone had to buy a small box to remove it. When DVD's came out it was just the next logical step. Again, it is a cost consideration. Why can you go to Walmart and buy some old movies for $2? Others cost $5 others cost $12, some cost $19? There is a point where people will say, those movies aren't that good, I won't pay that price, but since it is easy to copy, I will just make a copy of a rental because $4 is about what it is worth. Sometimes you will rent a bunch of movies and can't watch them all before they are due back. Make a copy to watch later. If it was good, lend it to a friend. Again, people think the movie companies are putting out a product that costs too much. Why is it illegal to copy movies, music, software? In manufacturing, it is OK, that is why China is manufacturing all the things that the U.S. used to make. Sure, they didn't put the same name on it but they make the same thing and sell it for less. Is that piracy? In a way, Yes. Someone else thought up a product, started making and selling it for a profit and the Chinese said 'yes that is a great product and we can make it here and ship it there cheaper than they can buy the raw materials, ha ha' so they did and much of our manufacturing base has left the country. So, I think many people support piracy because they save money. However, some people really over do it. I have heard of people downloading 24 hours a day. Others have traded hard drives with many GB of music and movies. People are just collecting everything they can get their hands on for free. It is like if someone broke into a video music store and everyone rushed in and grabbed all they could hold, They are taking stuff they are not even interested in ever viewing/listening to. Sorry this is so long, hope it helps, just MHO

If you are talking about movies, CDs, etc. it is illegal. It is stealing the work of other people. Some day, when you make a video, someone may pirate it and make more money from it than you will.

If you are talking about piracy on the high seas.....

People are acquainted with only the romanticized versions of piracy that they see in movies, and think that all pirates look like movie stars.

They are unaware of the cruelty of real pirates, who were a murderous bunch of cut-throats and totally without a shred of human decency. They were the dregs of society who were hanged by the neck until dead when they were caught.

There are still real-life pirates off the coast of Africa and in the Far East. I have no wish to meet any of them.

Piracy is the worst form of armed robbery. People were tortured, maimed, and murdered. Women were raped and murdered.

Yes, piracy is wrong and it is illegal. Kidnapping, murder, rape, torture, and robbery are crimes.

What kind of proof do you want and need?

what? most people don't support piracy... what are you talking about? arrrr... it's a tough life on the high seas!

seeing all the other responses... i really think we need to define piracy. is piracy the taking of a creative work without paying? like downloading from napster?

what if i download an mp3 that is a song i already own? is that piracy? this is the problem i see... when we began sharing files and calling it piracy, we forgot what "fair use" was. when i was young, you could buy albums and blank tapes and make mixes for your friends. that was considered "fair use", but it is very similar to napster if you just consider the act of sharing.

most people support sharing because they see it as an acceptable act, not a criminal one. just as when prohibition began, immediately a black market sprang up to supply illegal alcohol, this is the result of taking an act on the fringe of the law and criminalizing it. now, we all look like criminals, because we are persisting in something that seems perfectly legal... because it always was before.

if i own the beatles white album, why should i pay apple for the copy i must use on my ipod? the beatles already got their money for the songs, and i paid apple for the ipod, why should i pay apple for what the beatles made? as technology keeps improving, why should i keep handing money to people who are merely the gatekeepers of media, not the creators of it?

Piracy is illegal but people support it because it's less expensive than the real thing. It's bad because in purchasing piracy items the people or company whose items are being pirated don't get royalties on them.

yes piracy is "wrong" but what most people don't understand is that the artist only gets about a dollar of the profits from a CD. Their money doesn't come from people buying CD's it comes from doing promotions doing concerts and what-not. I don't know about the royalties on movies but I know the royalties on a CD are only a dollar.

It's a Robin Hood action...stealing from the rich, giving to the not so rich...

People see it as true justice, to be honest. The record industry has been treating listeners like dirt for years, and people feel this is how they should get their just desserts. Not too mention that they continue to fail to provide a better alternative. They say they can't compete with free?

piracy is ILLEGAL.

its like stealing something

coz people who sell pirated stuff dont pay taxes

they just copy if from the original thing, so the people who created it doesnt get paid.

and alot of people support it coz its much cheaper compared to the orginal stuff w/c is way more expensive.

It is so much cheaper. It costs only US 1 dollar to duplicate a Supernova album and to buy one will cost u about US 3 maybe compared to those originals which are very expensive when there are so many movies and songs that u might want to purchase.

piracy? which piracy are you talking about. jack-your-ship-steal-your-treasure-tie-you-to-a-hook-and-sink-your-*** type of piracy or making-bootlegged-copy-of-movies-cd-games-thereby-making-the-entertainment-industry-cry type of piracy? if its the former, i have no clue because i have neither been a pirate nor a victim. if its the latter, well what can i say....... easy money.

It is wrong, lol. If we steal their songs, those artists aren't going to make as much money. They're going to have to settle for silver jewelry ins instead of platinum...boo hoo. Insted of having 5 houses, they're only going be able to afford 4, now that's sad.

I agree with not pirating music. I have an iPod Touch, so I download 100% of my music from iTunes, the greatest music library in the world!
