How important is a Master's degree in becoming a psychiatrist?

I am planning on applying to Cambridge or Oxford (they appear to be the top two universities in the UK for medicine, which is compulsory to become a psychiatrist, and psychology, which I want to do for my Bachelor's degree) and eventually study for a doctorate in psychiatry. I just have a few inquiries about this.

Firstly, how important is it for me to get a Master's degree in a relevant subject to get onto a good medicine course in one of these universities and, likewise, the psychiatry doctorate course? I am aware that Master's degrees open up more opportunities in work such as higher pay and promotions etc. but I would like to speed up the qualification process as much as I can and try to complete a Master's degree once I have started earning a bit more money.

I was thinking of looking for a part time Master's degree course in psychology; are part time Master's degree courses available, and would you say that psychology is a helpful subject in the field I am looking to work in?

You appear confused about the relative careers and career paths of psychiatry (a medical specialty) and psychology.



If you want to study medicine in the UK the normal route if entry is from A-levels, the medical degree (MBChB, MBBS etc ) is a bachelors degree, you certainly do not need a masters in any way.

A masters degree would be a waste of time if you're planning on getting an MD. You don't need a masters to get into a medical program. It also wouldn't lead to any extra opportunities because it would be totally irrelevant once you got your MD and went through residency.
