Question:
What would be a better approach for a college major: computer science or management information systems?

Or would it be better to major in one and do a minor in the other? My job prospects include areas in system administration, web development type things, helping others.

Although I eventually want to escalate to heavier things like developing software for the next iPhone, helping a team create the next Adobe Photoshop, stuff like that.

Don't care about pay, but rather, I am looking at job security in the future (don't just reply with an answer like "Every computing job is being outsourced to some other country" since the job outlook seems to be pretty good so far). Just looking for some opinions.

I have been in the IT industry for the past 20 years and have done all the things you describe in your posting. My suggestion is to pursue Computer Science with a minor in . That something else can be accounting, biology, chemistry, biz admin, etceteras. Not only will you have more opportunities, your chances for job secuiry will increase.

Like the others said Computer Science is the way to go. For variety so you don't get bored in the long run and job security as you mentioned having a minor or or two is hard work but you will stand a better chance of keeping a dynamic job later on. Check out this university's website, it has the course list so maybe it will help you make your decision. http://www.webster.ac.th/academics/computer/ba_cs_info_mngt.htm

Hmm... computer science is more the technical side of things, particularly programming. MIS is more the nuts-n-bolts of keeping it all running.

If I had it to do over again I'd go with major in CS and minor in MIS (since I'm more technically-minded and good with code). But the other way would work too.

Once you graduate and get a job your degrees begin to mean less and job experience counts for more. And the learning never stops, really or you get left behind in a hurry.

I would go for the MIS. It will require many computer science course + get in a high demand field. The only reason you would go the other way is if you have a great interest in computer development.
