Question:
Was I wrongfully notified of college admittance? What should I do about this?

I am currently on the wait list for the community colleges of Maricopa nursing. The list is currently 2 to 2 1/2 years long. Maricopa nursing recently teamed up with NAU to create concurrent enrollment program. This program would allow a student to attend a Maricopa community college while pursuing an on line bachelors degree with Northern Arizona University. I recently received a voice mail and phone call from NAU stating I was admitted to the nursing program and congratulating me on my achievements. I also received a letter indicating that I was accepted for the nursing Spring 2012 term. Northern Arizona University's student website also indicated I was admitted. Therefore, I declined acceptance to two other colleges. These two other colleges were going to admit me for the Spring 2012 semester. I also notified my job that I would need to start to cut back on hours. I notified all my friends and family as I was extremely excited. With all my financial struggles, I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Until I received an email from Margi the director of nursing at Gateway community college on September 1, 2011. Her email stated I was placed on an alternate list. I immediately emailed Margi back asking what this meant. More than a week had past and I never heard a word from Margi. I finally called Margi and her assistant on September 12, 2011. I had to leave a voice mail. Margi finally called me back on September 13, 2012. She claimed that my email was sent to someone else at her college. I have a copy of the email I sent her and it clearly shows it was sent directly to her. Margi explained she had already filled all the available nursing spots and encouraged me to apply for the fall of 2012. Margi said she had no idea NAU sent me an acceptance letter and that I was not going to be admitted for the spring 2012 semester. With this being a partnered program, why was I notified that I was accepted? Then a few short days later I was told I am not. I am extremely devastated! I have rearranged my whole life, thinking I had been admitted. And who wouldn't think they were admitted with the all the letters and phone calls! I believe I should be accepted for the Spring 2012 semester as the letter I received from NAU indicated that I am.

If it was happening to me I would write to the Vice President of both colleges complaining very strongly, and saying I wanted them to honour the place that I was informed I had.

If that did not work, I would contact local television news stations, and good newspapers, and tell them the whole situation. I bet with the threat of their good names being widely broadcast they will suddenly say it was all an admin mistake (meaning the typist got it wrong) and that your place at the college is available.

You were admitted for the university but not for a specific program. That happens all the time and there's probably nothing you can do to get into the program. It's full. But since you appear to be admitted to NAU, I don't see why you can't take plenty of classes to keep you busy until a spot in the nursing program opens up, since your goal includes getting a bachelors degree. There's usually lots of general education and prerequisite courses that you'll need for the degree, and perhaps some that you could take at the community college as well. There are usually lots of prerequisite courses needed for nursing, such as algebra, nutrition, chemistry, biological sciences and labs, etcs.

Someone dropped the ball and if you make a big enough stink at NAU and Gateway right away You might be able to get them to "find" a space for you in the spring. You will need to write a lot of letters e-mails and make a few phone calls going over the heads of whoever signed the letters etc that you received but if you squeek loud enough you might get your way. I hope so.
