Hi there,

1) When a student (UK Student) is ready to write his dissertation, does he have to write dissertation proposal first?

When does he choose a topic?

I mean does he mention the topic in the proposal or does he write the proposal after choosing a topic?

What is the structure of Dissertation Proposal?

2) After Dissertation Proposal is approved, a student has to write his dissertation.

Can he add more references to his literature review as compaerd to the references he provided in his proposal?

What is the strucutre of a dissertation (UK dissertation)? (I believe typically it has 5 chapters)

I believe dissertation contains many other sections as well (I mean other than 5 chapters). For example, Abstract, Title Page, Bibliography, etc. Could you please let me know the structure in order?

Your help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Each university has its own rules -- so specific answers you get here won't help. It is likely that your university has a publication describing the format -- and it is likely that it is located on your school's web site.

I'm not in the UK -- but there are a lot of similarities between the UK system and the US system. So -- let me attempt to answer your questions:

I did not have to write a proposal for my dissertation. But I know that some other schools require it. So -- this will be school specific.

You would have to choose a potential topic before writing the proposal (how could you write one without knowing the topic?).

The structure of the proposal will differ depending on the school -- but also depending on the major field.

The student has to include all references in the dissertation. Of course there can be new references.

The structure of the dissertation depends on many things. I doubt that there is a rule that says it has to have five chapters. Mine had three. I know of others that were more like books, with dozens of chapters. Liberal arts dissertations tend to be very long, while those in the sciences tend to be fairly short.

Yes, you need an abstract, title page, etc. At my school, there was a document that told us the correct order. This is one of the things that differs by school.
