Are double minors worth it?

Is it worth getting a double minor, or would it not make a difference? I'm majoring in Political Science (not planning to go to law school) and minoring in Sociology. I'm considering a double minor in English. Would the English minor not make a difference on a resume?

HI Dream Achiever,

If you are considering a double major English and Political Science then I would read the school's catalog about double majors. My reason for saying this is it is possible that since the areas are similar you may only get one degree. Personally English is a good double major for education or business. Political science is a good double major for business or physical sciences.

Moving onto to your question about minors, having an English minor on a resume, from my own personal experience, would not make much difference. Minors can help if it is from a professional degree program such as business, journalism, or computer science to open doors for you. However an English minor I do not feel would be much use to you unless it was associated with a professional major.

It's certainly another bullet point to put, so it won't 'hurt' you in that regard.

But it still depends what you mean by "worth it". I'm not majoring in anything that will get me a solid job, so some people consider it impractical (I'm a philosophy and history major w/ a poli sci minor). But I view college as a place to learn about life, people, and a place to try and figure out how the world works. I don't want to leave college feeling unfulfilled on a deeper level. Do you truly enjoy English for learning's sake? If that English minor would help give you peace of mind, I would say that it is definitely worth it!

I don't see how it would make a huge difference. It might be a fun topic to talk about with strangers and in parties. Minors are usually to either compliment a major or taken for a student's own interest. Of course double minoring would take more money but if you're okay with that then go for it. However minoring in English and Sociology won't really get you anywhere. It doesn't even get people who major in it anywhere. Neither does PS if you don't plan on going to medicine or law school.

English majors like to say that majoring in English teaches them to write well. I can write well, I can write essays, short stories, reports, you name it and English isn't my major. That's why colleges make most freshman take English 101 and English 102 so all majors can write well, analyze, think critically and go anywhere and be able to communicate through writing.

English might be interesting to major in, but an employer wants to know what you're going to give back to the company. A nurse can take care of sick people. An accountant will analyze the company's financial state and tell them what direction they should head into. A programmer writes programs and applications that will improve the lives of computer users.

If you major in English it says you can write essays, analyze, think critically but it hasn't trained you for anything more specific. Its not a bad thing but English just doesn't get you hired much. Because other people who had more specific majors can do what English majors do and more, because their degree was more specific and because as freshman they took English credits and already know how to write, analyze, communicate through the written word.

You really ought to get a more specific major. PS and English majors are a dime a dozen. You need to support yourself after college so it makes sense to go for a more marketable major.

I do not even list my minors on my resume. When it comes to minors, who cares is the real question. No one does. Minoring means you took a few classes in one area, but not enough to be competent enough to do anything with it. I got two minors (math, physics) "accidentally" on my way to getting my actual degree (nuclear engineering). It is nothing worth talking about as far as I am concerned.
