Is Results day just one odd occasion where women can outperform men?

After all the exams in the REAL world they hardly ever make it to the senior positions of boardrooms, few go into government or take on senior lecturer positions. It seems there is still plenty of discrimination in law and public services as well. Do they lack a killer instinct that men naturally have more of? Are too many doing liberal-art subjects which do not offer the best employment prospects? I finished all my studies ages ago btw.

Up until very recent men have always been in positions of power like senior lecturing as you've mentioned. It takes a long time for these things to change and they're still changing. To get into a prominent position in government, become a senior lecturer etc takes a long time and thats why a lot of women are not to be seen in these positions but give it ten years and you'll see a lot more women in high jobs



Plus a huge factor in this is that a lot of women choose having children over a career in a business, university etc. Most women are naturally maternal and children would appeal to them more than a job as a government minister would be.

I did better at Uni than most of the guys, in a science subject too! However in the real world I dont have a senior position, but I am bloody good at what I do. I dont want to go any higher cos then i wouldnt be working with people, i would be 'thinking outside the box' and all that crap. I think maybe women settle for lesser positions because they then have more freedom to combine a career with the kids, etc. If youre needed in the boardroom til midnight how can you read your kids a bedtime story? So once I clock off thats it, my life is my own.

Society claims to accept everyone and be all for equality but when it comes down to it women are still treated differently to men. If they werent they would be in the senior roles and would not be discriminated against in this way, although I do think things are slowly changing and more and more women are proving their potential in these roles. I think people should forget about sex/race/religion and focus more on the individual. A worker is a good one because they are talented/ passionate/ skillful/ intelligent and not because they are male or female/black or white.

It's a variety of things:



(1) Women on *average* do better than men on school tests. However, at the very upper levels, there are more men.



(2) Women tend to take their family responsibilities more seriously than men do. Among people who've never had children, the frequency of high achievers is quite similar among men and women. If you want to call this "killer instincts" then yes.



(3) It's definitely true that women are more heavily represented in fields like art history and sociology, and less represented in science and engineering.

Have you heard of the old boy network ?



It has been around a long time, professional men in powerful corperations, they usually dictate the company policy.



Although it is not as obvious nowadays, quotas are met re minoritys which of course includes women.

Some women do get through on merit too.....is'nt progress wonderful....

Discrimination.



People just don't want to have women in high positions no matter how qualified and able they are to maintain it. The men can't handle a woman having more power than them.



Although some women do successfully gain a high position job, but I say there is still discrimation.

I think women can be naturally better than men in having certain skills but then again times are changing and it is equal rights time boys. we are very ambitious and if given equal chances we can get up there with the best of ya! :P:P

Prejudice continues in the workplace because of cultural expectations...it is nothing to do with women's inability to mimic male behaviour.

Not doing too many 'liberal art subjects' anyway. I've just got my As results in physics, chemistry, maths, further maths, and English literature, and got great grades in all of them.

Another good explanation is that there are more male sociopaths than female ones. It is proven that sociopaths tend to thrive in positions of authority.

I know this isn't what you are asking - but in my secondary school the boys out-perform the girls!
