Need help improving my reading!!?

I am a student and my reading is not taking me where I want to go. I find that i read much too fast and just skim to get to the main points to add to my notes. And when i read slowly it only slows down my comprehension and i miss the main point. My goal now is to actually enjoy arriving at the main points and to get satisfaction out of reading. Can you think of anything that could help me enjoy and comprehend better.

i didn't read for a while then when i went back to it i had this problem. the key is when you catch yourself skimming stop, go back to the last part you really read and start reading agian. it's frustruating and it takes forever to read something but you get faster at it and skim less. soon you'll be reading and compreheding away! just keep at it!

Not all written material has "main points." Some exists as much for the journey as for the destination. Try reading some good old fashioned poetry and savor the meter and the rhyme and the imagery. If that works, move up to novels by people like Melville or Dickens, with lots of extremely rich imagery. You probably skim novels now, looking for "plot points," but if you are you are missing 9/10th of their reason for being.

One great thing to do is photocopy what you need to read and highlight the good bits with a bright highlighter. this means that you read it all carefully and you can write notes from your highlights. I am a teacher and use it at school for my kids all the time- it really helps all abilities.

I found these sites that have some good tips for reading and making notes. Im sorry if they are a bit young but I think that they have good ideas.

Reading and notemaking are skills you use and improve your entire life- good for you for trying to do them better!

The most impotant thing to improve anything is practice. If you practice reading some books like goosebumps for about 30 minutes everyday you surely will improve in your reading.
