Question:
What are office hours?

I guess it is stupid, but I need to know because I hear they are really important and I want to do the best I can in college.

What are office hours for? (School, obviously, but is it homework help or catching up or getting extra credit or what?) Do I need to go to office hours even if I am doing very very well in the class? Will the hours be on the syllabus if the professor gives one? Will it be one-on-one, or a group, or a short line up and ask a question then leave or what?

Office hours in college/university are the times when your professor expects to be in his/her office, and thus available if you have further questions.

It's not really intended as "homework help" and certainly isn't for "extra credit." Instead, it's when we (professors) make ourselves available to you (students). You don't need to go unless you have questions that you didn't get answered in class, but you're welcome to come whenever you have questions.

Office hours are usually printed on the cours syllabus and usually on your professor's office/lab door.

Your visit to office hours could be one-on-one, but may not be. It depends on your classmates and the topics generating questions. My office hours often have NO ONE coming by, but sometimes get five or six students at the same time, often with the same questions. Some students come by a lot, and others never come by.

Here's the important part... *IF* you're doing poorly (but let's not plan on that...) and you're *not* going to office hours, then you're not trying. So if you have trouble... GO! And don't wait until the day before the exam to let your professor know that you don't understand something from the first week of class. We use office hours to figure out if the class is understanding. If you (the class) demonstrate that you're not getting it, I'll usually go back and re-address the topic for the entire class. But I can't do that if I don't know until it's too late.

Don't stress about office hours. They're for you to use as you need them. Good luck in college!

That probably referrs to the time your Professors are in their office, which is only a few hours a day.

Professors are not like high school teachers. Full time ones only teach like 30 or so hours a week. Sometimes less. Those that don't do research (non science ones) go to their office inbetween classes and THAT is called OFFICE hours and it varies for each teacher and THAT is the ONLY time you can sit down and talk with them on issues, other than grabbing them before or after class to ask a simple question.

But if you want them, for example, to go over your class selection in your major and see what they think of your game plan, that is done wtih Office Hours.

They will tell you their office hours or it will be posted.

Now the general SCHOOL office is probably open 8-5. That's administration. Maybe it's open 7-6 even!

That's if you want to ask something about fees or your transcripts.

Professors have schedules too...and when they aren't teaching a class, have other duties from time to time. One of the things a professor will do is to tell his classes what his "office hours" are...like 10:00-11:00 Tuesday and Thursday. That means he will be in his faculty office during that time and you can either drop in to see him if you need to discuss something or just to talk. Some professors like you to tell him [like after class] that you'd like to come see him during office hours. Other professors don't mind if you just drop in without a prior appointment. For a professor, "office hours" is when he's available at a certain time and in his faculty office. Usually one-on-one, but sometimes he'll see a couple of people at the same time...it's his choice. If you need to see him alone, wait until the other person leaves or ask him if you could see him alone next time. Sometimes the office hours for a professor are listed in the syllabus, and sometimes it's more informal and he'll just tell you when he's available and "open for business".

So far as I know or can remember, going to see a professor during his office hours isn't mandatory...it's based on what you need from him, or if he needs to see you to discuss a problem--in which case, he'll ask you to drop by. No extra credit involved, and if you're doing well and don't have a need to chat about your work, then no need to go.

no he means professor office hours. their office hours are hours that they are in their office at the university, and you can go to them with any questions. they will let you know when and where they are. it should be-one-on one unless other students are there. going to them is a good way to show initiative, but dont just go to be a brown-noser. keep up on your reading and go with specific questions when need to clarify things. it's informal, but it depends on the personality of the professor. it might be an in and out situation, or if they are more personable it might be more of a conversation type thing. again, dont go just to show up and look like a bump on a log...he'll know if you're there to kiss butt.

Office hours are usually 9-5, nothing to do with school, except maybe the school office.

it is lucky to work 9-5.

office hours depends on the company policy.

The country i am staying, some co office hours is

1........8 to 5 (1 hour rest in between) or

2....... 9 to 6 (1 hour rest in between) or

3....... 8.15 to 5 (45minutes rest in between) or

4........8 to 6 (some did this) or

And some may still need to work 4 hours on Saturday.

Those with longer working hours normally is the local co. For co based USA, UK, Norway working hours is shorter. Among those forreign based companies, Japan co is the worst, with longer working hours and less benefits.
