I have lived in FL since 2002. I've gone to graduate school at FSU and am currently about to finish another graduate degree at UF. There are people from the northeast who go to college in this area. There are factors to consider:

* academic concentration

* career goals

* preference of geographic location: small town, large metro area, beach, religious affiliation, etc.

* job market

In terms of academic research and rigor, UF is the state flagship university. It has many departments, a large healthcare research center, the highest ranking law school in the state, an elite sports identity, and a large alumni network. The main problem with UF is that it's in a rather small town without a large number of job opportunities except healthcare. I have found that UF graduates typically move after graduation to find a good job.

FSU is in a rather rural part of the state. Tallahassee is large by regional standards of North FL but is the center of state government. Hence, if you aspire to work in politics or some government-based career like law enforcement, public health, etc. then FSU can work. It does have excellent academic departments. FSU also has a great sports program with a strong alumni following.

In terms of religion, FSU and UF are both in heavily Protestant regions and are in the "Bible Belt." Gainesville and Tallahassee are traditional "southern" towns off the boundaries of the college campus. So a person from a deeply conservative Baptist, Methodist, Anglican, Lutheran, or some other Protestant religion may feel more comfortable with the southern-style conservatism of the local cities. Tim Tebow is the face of UF - an extremely conservative Protestant from Jacksonville - a "Bible Belt" Baptist.

If you exclusively have an extreme hyperfocus on the beach, then Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton/Ft. Lauderdale or Florida Gulf Coast U. by Naples are the best choices for undergraduates. Both schools are right near the beach within walking distance (literally). FGCU was recently in the focus of their Sweet 16 basketball appearance. FAU has a lot of successful alumni in the Miami area. FGCU actually beat Miami in basketball but lost to UF (Go Gators) -lol.

By contrast with FSU and UF, the U. of Miami, U. of South FL, and U. of Central FL are in the major metro areas of the state. Miami is at Coral Gables, USF is in Tampa, and UCF is at Orlando. All three have very good academic departments and are in prime areas for job networking. The religious diversity is also very high. Miami, Orlando, and Tampa are NOT part of the "Bible Belt." Miami tends to be more heavily Catholic since the area has a very high population density of Latin Americans or Hispanics like Cubans, South Americans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc. The annual FSU-Miami college football game is a fierce rivalry -a clash of "cultures" between traditional southerners from the "Bible Belt" of FSU and Tallahassee versus the heavily Latin American Miami fan base. I currently work in Miami and attended the Orange Bowl, FSU-Miami game, and many Miami basketball games. Just a word of warning, Miami, Tampa, and Orlando can get traffic congestion pretty badly.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at FSU and UF. Now that I am moving onto a PhD and hoping to work full-time while doing it, I need to be in a metro area with a good program. In that regard, I am applying to UCF and USF for that last graduate degree I want. Both are in areas of high job density for my field of engineering.

I would recommend reviewing the academic major, job market, location, and cultural factors. A visit would be highly advised. For example, if I were to choose healthcare I would focus on UF or USF. For criminology and state-based jobs, FSU is highly recommended. For aerospace engineering, UCF has networked with NASA for decades. So it depends on your aptitude and choice of study too.

So you have great choices. Best wishes.
